Sant Pacià Parish - Mosaic of Gaudí

Parish of Sant Pacià - Gaudí Mosaic in Barcelona

The Parish of Sant Pacià in Barcelona houses one of the first works of the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. This impressive mosaic is found on the floor of the church and is considered one of the most outstanding examples of the neoclassical style.

History and architecture

The church was designed by the architect Joan Torras Guardiola in 1879 and completed in 1881 in a neo-Gothic style. The floor mosaic, designed by Gaudí, was made by marbleist Luigi Pellerin, who was also Gaudí's professor at the Provincial School of Architecture.

Originally, this temple was the chapel of the convent school of the Congregation of Religious of Jesus and Mary. However, after the nuns moved out, the church was sold to the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the Marists. During the Tragic Week of 1909, the church was burned down and later used as a grain and legume warehouse.

In 1923, the Bishopric of Barcelona acquired the temple and in 1930 it officially became a parish. During the Civil War, the church was confiscated and used as a soup kitchen under the name "Comedores Durruti".

Restorations and news

In 1985, the mural paintings by Eudald Serrasolses and the sculpture of the Risen Christ, carved by Juan María Medina Ayllón, were inaugurated in the Santíssim chapel. Gaudí's mosaics were restored in 1988 by Lluís Bru.

To this day, Gaudi's mosaic remains an impressive attraction for visitors and tourists who come across this hidden gem in Barcelona. Although the main facade of the building still shows traces of the CNT and FAI acronyms, the mosaic shines in all its splendor and shows Gaudí's mastery and talent in his use of color and design.
